Description
Greenlandic dog sledding — using the Greenlandic sled dog (an ancient breed now a recognised Greenlandic cultural heritage) in the traditional fan hitch rather than the linear hitch used in North America — remains an active transport method in West Greenland settlements north of the Arctic Circle where dogs are still legally permitted. This image was made during an Ilulissat community hunt trip in March, crossing the frozen Disko Bay sea ice toward the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier — the world’s most productive glacier by ice discharge volume. The 12-dog fan hitch team is photographed from directly behind the sled, the musher visible between the dogs, the icebergs of the Ilulissat Icefjord (UNESCO World Heritage Site) filling the background horizon. Shot at 1/2000 second on a 24mm prime from a position on a second sled, the fan hitch’s geometry and the glacier context are both fully communicated.
