Description
The Khongoryn Els dunes — the Singing Sands — of Mongolia’s Southern Gobi Desert are among the largest dunes in Central Asia, reaching 800 metres height and extending 185 kilometres in length. The desert’s extreme continental climate — summer temperatures exceeding 40°C, winter temperatures below -40°C — means that dawn is the only practical time for extended photography in the summer months. At the moment of first oblique sidelight, the sand ripple texture on every dune face is simultaneously illuminated from one direction and shadowed from the other, creating maximum definition of the micro-topography. The single Bactrian camel caravan — three camels and a guide — was positioned deliberately at the base of the primary dune to establish scale and introduce a narrative element into what would otherwise be a purely formal composition. The image was made in complete silence before the desert’s consistent daytime wind erases the overnight ripple patterns.
