Description
Sørvágsvatn is the largest lake in the Faroe Islands — but its fame rests on a striking optical illusion visible only from one specific vantage point on the Trælanípa cliff. When viewed from this location at the right angle, the lake appears to be suspended high above the Atlantic Ocean surface, rather than sitting at 30 metres above sea level as it actually does. The illusion is created by the geometry of the cliff edge in the foreground, which drops away steeply, and the visual relationship between the lake surface and the ocean far below and to the west. This photograph was made in near- gale conditions with 60km/h gusts, requiring tripod ballast and careful positioning on the exposed cliff edge. The dramatic Faroese weather — grey-green sea, turbulent cloud, the lake ruffled by wind — contributes to the image’s character, avoiding the postcard perfection that cloud-free conditions would produce.
