Edinburgh Castle sits on Castle Rock — the remnant plug of an extinct volcano — and has been continuously occupied as a fortress or royal residence for over 3,000 years. The view from Princes Street across the valley to the south is Edinburgh’s most iconic urban vista: the rock rising 80 metres above the valley floor, with the castle buildings occupying the complete summit. In winter, the castle is floodlit throughout the long Scottish night, and the Walter Scott Monument — the Victorian Gothic spire on Princes Street — provides a characteristic Edinburgh foreground element whose own complex Gothic stone pinnacles echo the castle’s architectural skyline above. This photograph was made at 7am in January — before the city’s morning business activity creates foreground obstruction — in near-freezing conditions with a light frost on the Princes Street Gardens below. The floodlit castle and the just-visible dawn sky create the characteristic Edinburgh winter dawn composition.
