Eagle Eye — Bald Eagle Portrait

Photographed at a raptor rehabilitation facility with full educational photography permit, this extreme close-up portrait of a bald eagle uses a 500mm lens at minimum focus distance to achieve an image scale that resolves individual feather barbules around the eye, the precise geometry of the yellow orbital ring, and the extraordinary ambergold iris with its black pupil. The image was made possible by the temperament of this particular individual — a fully imprinted educational bird that maintained the prolonged stillness required for the precise focus stacking technique used to achieve complete depth of field across the head. The resulting image communicates the power and visual acuity of the bald eagle’s gaze with directness that full-frame portraits cannot approach.
