Djemaa el-Fna — Marrakech Night Market Activity

699.00 د.إ

Djemaa el-Fna square in Marrakech at 9pm — the food stall smoke rising under the lights, the Koutoubia minaret visible above the activity, snake charmers, henna artists, and acrobats visible in the compressed crowd of the world’s greatest urban theatre.

Description

Djemaa el-Fna is a UNESCO Living Cultural Heritage site — the only space inscribed by UNESCO for its intangible cultural heritage — a public square in Marrakech that transforms from a daytime market to an evening theatre of entertainers, food sellers, and crowds from sunset to midnight. The aerial perspective, available from the rooftop terraces of the surrounding restaurants, reveals the geometric organisation of the activity: the food stalls in their lit rows in the southern portion, the entertainment circles of storytellers and acrobats in the centre, the permanent activity of the henna artists and snake charmers around the square’s periphery. This image was made from the Café de France terrace at 9pm at the peak of the evening’s activity, a 70-200mm telephoto at f/8 compressing the crowd density and the rising food stall smoke with the Koutoubia minaret visible above the haze.
