Description
El Helicoide is one of the most architecturally ambitious and tragically unrealised projects of 20th-century Latin American modernism — a 1958 design for a spiral shopping centre built on a hilltop in Caracas where vehicles would drive up the external ramp to reach retail units at every level. Construction stopped at the shell stage, the building’s history encompassing squatter occupation, government takeover, and its current function as a SEBIN intelligence detention facility. The architectural photograph communicates the building’s visual power independent of its historical narrative: the concrete spiral ramp circling the hilltop structure in three complete turns, the unfinished concrete shell revealing the structural system, the Caracas barrio climbing the hillside around the base. This image was made from the highway overpass with a 200mm telephoto at f/8, the spiral geometry of the ramps visible in their full three-turn ascent against the Caracas mountain backdrop.
