Description
Bruges’s canal system — the drainage network of the medieval textile trading city — provides the most photographically concentrated medieval townscape in northern Europe: honey-stone and red brick facades of 13th to 17th-century construction reflected in the calm canal water, the Belfry tower rising above the Market Square visible between and above the facades. The Groenerei canal at the Rozenhoedkaai intersection provides the composition that includes both the Belfry’s full reflection and the canal house facades: the Belfry’s 83-metre tower reflected in the canal water between the facades, the stone bridge in the foreground providing the visual anchor. This image was made at 7am on a windless June morning, the canal surface completely undisturbed to provide a perfect reflection. Shot on a 24mm prime at f/11 with a 1-second exposure to smooth the minimal surface tension of the still canal, the Belfry reflection is sharp from its cap to its base in the water.
