Description
Monserrate dominates the eastern skyline of Bogotá at 3,152 metres — 600 metres above the city which itself sits at 2,600 metres altitude in the Colombian Andes. The cable car and funicular providing access to the hilltop sanctuary offer a photography opportunity unique among Latin American viewpoints: the cabin window provides a framed view of the city below as a contained composition rather than the open panorama of the summit. This image was made from the ascending cable car at the mid-point of the 1.5-kilometre cable, the city of Bogotá filling the cabin window from edge to edge: the colonial Candelaria district visible in the foreground below the mountain slope, the modern financial district of Chapinero in the middle distance, and the flat Bogotá Savanna extending 50km to the west. Shot on a 24mm prime through the clean glass of the cabin window at f/8, the cable and the distant summit station provide the vertical compositional structure.
