Description
The blue-footed booby’s courtship display is among the most elaborately behavioural wildlife photography subjects in the Galápagos — the male’s sky-pointing display, where the bird stretches its beak to the vertical while spreading wings and stepping to show the blue feet, is both comical and visually extraordinary. The Galápagos boobies have evolved a level of fearlessness toward humans that allows photographers to approach within metres without disturbing the display. This image captures the full sky-point display from a ground-level shooting position that places the camera at the bird’s foot level — the perspective that best shows the iridescent blue feet against the volcanic rock substrate. The male’s sky-pointing beak, spread wings, and displaying feet create a geometric composition of the bird’s full courtship posture. The Española Island volcanic coastline and the Pacific Ocean provide the background.
