Description
Tempelhof Airport, the Nazi-era airport designed by Ernst Sagebiel between 1936-1941, was closed as an airport in 2008 and the building — one of the largest buildings by footprint in the world — became a protected monument while its future use was debated by Berlin authorities. The hangars, in particular, retain an extraordinary architectural quality: the 120-metre concrete arched spans with their original 1940s construction details are in near-original condition, and the filtered daylight entering through the partially opened hangar gates at specific times of day creates the diagonal light beam photography that characterises the interior at its most dramatic. This image was made during an authorised architectural tour at 11am when the summer sun angle produces beams of sufficient angle to cross the full hangar width. Shot on a 16mm ultra-wide at f/11, the full arch span and the light beam columns are preserved in a single exposure.
