Baobab Silhouette — Zimbabwe at Sunset

The African baobab (Adansonia digitata) is the continent’s most iconic tree — a specimen with a trunk that can reach 11 metres diameter and which may live for over 2,000 years. In western Zimbabwe’s hot, semi-arid lowveld, mature baobabs rise from the surrounding mopane woodland as solitary giants, their smooth grey-pink trunk and skeletal winter crown creating powerful silhouette subjects against the African sunset. This photograph was made during the dry season — when the baobab has shed its leaves to reduce transpiration — from a low position that elevated the tree trunk against the western sky. The brief African sunset window — lasting 15–20 minutes from first red sky to darkness — required pre-positioning in the late afternoon, having identified the tree’s relationship to the setting sun using compass bearing. The warm magenta and orange sky transitions to the characteristic African purple-blue at the zenith.
