The Kecak — the Monkey Dance — performed at Uluwatu Temple on Bali’s southern cliff at sunset combines the Ramayana epic’s fire ordeal narrative with the traditional sanghyang trance ritual. The fire dance sequence — in which a male performer re-enacts Sita’s proof of purity by running through burning coconut husks — is the ceremony’s dramatic climax, occurring as the sun drops behind the Indian Ocean horizon beyond the temple cliff.
