Description
Primary Amazon rainforest canopy photographed from a research aircraft at 800 metres altitude produces an image of overwhelming vegetative density — a green ocean where individual trees are distinguishable only by subtle shadow variations, the canopy surface undulating like a slow-moving swell across the basin. This image was made from the open door of a chartered Cessna over the Juruá River basin in Amazonas state — one of the least disturbed areas of primary forest remaining in the Amazon system. The single meander of the Juruá’s tributary provides the only break in the canopy surface, its coffee-brown water cutting a sinuous line through the green. The horizon in every direction shows more forest — the visual communication of the Amazon’s incomprehensible scale.
