Abandoned Industrial — Homestead Steel Aerial

Description

The Homestead Steel Works, once the largest integrated steel plant in the world, was demolished beginning in 1988, but portions of the original infrastructure — the slag-processing buildings, the railroad transfer shed, the river loading docks — survive in various states of dereliction on the Monongahela River bank. This aerial photograph, made from a drone at 150m, captures the visual scale of the abandoned industrial landscape — the monumental structure of the surviving buildings, the rust-coloured ground chemistry of a century of industrial occupation, and the organic colonisation of the derelict site by pioneer vegetation — creating a post-industrial landscape photograph of considerable documentary and aesthetic significance.
