Description
The Lofoten Islands offer the combination of dramatic mountain-and-fjord scenery with strong northern lights activity that makes them the world’s most sought-after aurora location for landscape photographers. This image was made at the rorbuer village of Reine — the most photographed village in Norway — during a Kp 5 geomagnetic event in February when snow still lay on the peaks but the harbour ice had cleared enough to provide a reflection surface. The traditional red fishing cabins on their wooden piers are lit from within, their warm light providing the compositional anchor for the frame. Above, the aurora is in its rapid curtain phase, the green-white light reflected in the fjord below. The Moskenesøya mountain peaks form the silhouetted backdrop behind the village.
