Description
Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon in southeastern Iceland is one of the country’s most visited natural attractions a body of water that has grown from 7km² to 18km² since 1970 as the Breiðamerkurjökull outlet glacier has retreated due to climate warming. The lagoon is filled with calved icebergs in various stages of melting — from ice-blue cathedral- scale blocks to small jewel-like pieces at the Diamond Beach on the ocean side. In June, the surrounding terrain blooms with Nootka lupine — introduced from Alaska and now widespread in Iceland — whose purple flowers provide a vivid foreground counterpoint to the blue-white icebergs. This photograph layers the three elements in progressive distance: purple lupine foreground, floating icebergs middle ground, and the vertical ice face of the glacier itself on the far shore. The June midnight sun provides directional golden light that lasts throughout the 24-hour day.
