The Great Migration’s Mara River crossing — when between 1.5 and 2 million wildebeest, 500,000 zebra and 200,000 Thomson’s gazelle attempt to cross from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Kenya’s Maasai Mara and back — is the largest terrestrial mammal migration on Earth and the most concentrated wildlife spectacle available to a photographer. The Mara River crossings are unpredictable — a herd may mill at the crossing point for hours before the first animal leaps, or the whole herd may cross in 15 minutes. This photograph captures a major crossing in full progress: the water surface is white with breaking waves from thousands of impacting hooves, crocodiles are visible in motion toward individual animals, and the compressed mass of animals on both banks extends well beyond the frame. The image required 4 consecutive days of game drives, 12 hours of waiting at the crossing point per day.
