Fjord Ice — Greenland Calving Front Aerial

899.00 $

The calving front of a Greenland outlet glacier photographed from 250 metres — the ice cliff face, the brash ice apron at its base, and the floating icebergs of different ages creating a composition of blue-white geological impermanence.

Description

Greenland’s outlet glacier calving fronts are among the most dynamic and photogenic geological features accessible by small aircraft — the ice cliff faces, rising 30 to 60 metres above sea level, calve continuously under the thermal and mechanical stress of contact with the warmer seawater. The aerial perspective captures what the calving front boat photography cannot — the complete system geometry from the grounded glacier through the calving zone to the flotilla of recently calved icebergs of different ages drifting seaward. This photograph was made at 250 metres in the golden light of a Greenlandic summer evening, the low sun illuminating the ice cliff face in warm orange tones that contrast with the cold blue of the deep fjord water and the white of the older icebergs. The brash ice apron — the debris from recent calving events — surrounds the ice cliff base as a white collar against the dark water.
