Description
Whale shark photography in filter feeding behaviour captures the functional anatomy of the world’s largest fish at its most visible — the filter feeding mechanism of the open-mouth swimming technique reveals the gill arch structure, the cephalic lobes that direct water flow, and the fine dermal denticle surface texture of the skin. This image was made at surface level from a snorkelling position above and to the side of a whale shark in the filter feeding position, the animal’s 6-metre body visible in plan view with the head occupying the frame’s near field. The open mouth — at full gape approximately 1.5 metres wide — shows the gill arches as a series of parallel vertical structures framed by the pale interior of the mouth cavity. The characteristic white spots and dashes on the grey-blue skin surface create the species’ identification pattern clearly visible through the clear water at approximately 1 metre distance.
