Description
San Telmo is the historical barrio of Buenos Aires most associated with tango — the neighbourhoodwhere the dance developed in the late 19th century among the immigrant communities of the Río de la Plata, and where the Sunday feria on Defensa Street continues to provide tango performance in the streets around the Plaza Dorrego. This image was made at the Sunday feria during an impromptu performance by a professional tango couple who use the Plaza Dorrego area as their regular performance location, the doorway of a colonial building on Defensa Street chosen as the backdrop for its combination of yellow ochre paint, iron knocker detail, and the cobblestone of the street visible around the dancers. Shot at 1/200 second on a 50mm prime at f/2.8, the dancers are sharp in the mid-step of the ocho while the street behind provides the San Telmo context.
