The ribeirinhos — the river people of the Amazon basin — live in communities built on stilts or floating platforms on the river and its tributaries, their entire material culture organised around the river’s seasonal flood cycle. The floating markets where ribeirinho producers trade directly with urban buyers from their canoes represent a commercial tradition extending centuries before European contact. This photograph was made from the deck of a river boat near a floating market community on the Rio Solimões upstream from Manaus — a position that provided an elevated, unintrusive angle on the trading activity below. The canoes are loaded with açaí berries, pirarucu fish, manioc, and seasonal fruit — the full diversity of Amazonian river commerce visible in a single frame. The photograph required a 6-hour river journey from Manaus to reach a market operating in an environment genuinely free of tourist infrastructure.
